Michigan is Considering Adding Tolls on Freeways to Help Pay for Road Repairs

Michigan officials are exploring innovative solutions to address a shortfall in the budget for road infrastructure.

The state relies on federal, state, and local funds for road maintenance, with about half of the state’s funding coming from the gas tax and the other half from vehicle registration fees.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is considering several options to compensate for the shortfall, including the introduction of tolls on heavily traveled freeways and the implementation of road usage charges.
