Maher Harp, a student from Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights, has dedicated over 575 hours to service as a member of the National Honor Society (NHS), earning more than 31 chapter-based awards.
He has been awarded a $5,625 scholarship as one of 20 finalists and is still in contention for the grand prize of $25,000 or one of four $10,625 prizes. Harp has held leadership roles in his NHS chapter, including parliamentarian and vice president, and has led initiatives such as courtyara clean-ups and rain garden rehabilitations, earning his school the highest green status in Michigan.
He has participated in blood drives, raised over $15,000 for breast cancer and Angelman Syndrome research, and contributed to the NASA-GLOBE research program, leading to the publication of three research papers. Harp is also a varsity tennis player, team captain, lead programmer for his school’s robotics team, class president, vice president of Key Club, student representative of the Dearborn Heights Stewards Watershed Commission, and a lead youth organizer for the Taha Foundation.
The NHS is awarding $2 million in scholarships to 600 students, recognizing their scholarship, service, leadership, and character, with one national winner receiving $25,000, four others receiving $10,625, 20 finalists each earning $5,625, and 575 semifinalists receiving $3,200.
