A 28-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car while on eastbound I-696 near Hoover Road in Warren early Sunday morning.
Relatives say Nateria Smith had run out of gas and went to get fuel. As she was walking back, she was struck before making it to her vehicle. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.
The driver fled the scene.
Warren police have taken over the investigation and confirmed they responded to a fatal crash on the freeway. More details are expected to be released Monday.
Smith’s family is asking anyone with information to contact the Warren Police Department.
