Wayne State University student shot and killed on Detroit’s east side

DETROIT (MDN)- Family and community members are mourning the tragic and untimely death of an 18-year-old Wayne State University student who was killed in a shooting on Detroit’s east side.

Casey Wills was fatally shot early Saturday morning in the 18000 block of Cardoni, near Nevada & Chrysler Dr.

She was sitting in a car with her friends when two unknown suspects approached their vehicle on foot. That’s when one of the suspects armed with a gun, fired multiple shots into their vehicle and fatally struck her. After the shooting, both suspects ran south from the location then entered an unknown vehicle, possibly Chevy Impala and fled west on Nevada, police said.

Casey was a freshman at Wayne State University and was set to graduate in 2024. She worked 2 jobs, including Footlocker, where she recently got promoted.

She was also a Board Member at Alternatives for Girls, an outreach program that helps homeless high-risk girls and young women avoid violence, teen pregnancy and exploitation. It also helped them explore and access the support, resources and opportunities necessary to be safe, to grow strong and to make positive choices in their lives.

Police did not release a motive behind the shooting, but according to the GoFundMe, the shooting appeared to be random.

Police say they are searching for two suspects. The first suspect was described as a black male, wearing all black, armed with a long gun. The second suspect was described as a black male who was wearing light clothing.
