Warrant request submitted in case of 2 children who died inside van at Detroit casino garage

Detroit police have submitted a warrant request against a mother after her two children were found dead in a Greektown parking garage. Wayne County Prosecutors office confirmed they have received the request.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office previously confirmed that 2-year-old A’Millah Currie and 9-year-old Darnell Currie, Jr. died from carbon monoxide toxicity. Their deaths were ruled accidental.

The findings were finalized following thorough examinations, with the official cause and manner of death certified on March 5, 2025.

The case unfolded in February 2025, when Detroit police launched an investigation after the children were brought to Children’s Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Their mother, who was experiencing homelessness, had been staying with her five children—ages 2 to 13—inside a minivan parked at the Hollywood Casino parking structure.

Authorities initially suspected the children may have died to freezing temperatures. However, the medical examiner’s report confirmed that carbon monoxide toxicity was the cause of death.

No further information will be released until the warrant review process has been completed, according to the WCPO.

Statement from Chief Todd A. Bettison:

“I want to clarify recent reports regarding the tragic incident at the Greektown Casino parking structure involving Darnell Currie Jr. and A’Millah Currie. The Detroit Police Department has completed its investigation into their deaths and submitted the findings to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review. DPD has not requested charges to be filed against any family member of the children. As we do with every case, we have simply turned over our investigative file to the Prosecutor’s Office for its review and determination. Any charging decisions will be made solely by the Prosecutor’s Office.”
