Novi teen arrested after breaking into 35+ cars

Farmington Hills Police arrested a suspect believed to be connected to many weekend larcenies from vehicles, thanks to a drone equipped with thermal imaging.

Officers increased patrols in neighborhoods after reports of multiple thefts. Around 3 a.m. on Monday, a patrol officer spotted several cars with interior lights on in a subdivision near 12 Mile and Drake Roads. Suspecting break-ins, the officer called for backup and requested a police drone.

The drone pilot launched and used thermal imaging to scan the area. The suspect’s heat signature was detected, and police tracked him as he ran through backyards and tried to hide. Officers followed real-time updates from the drone and located the suspect hiding in a wooded area near 12 Mile and Drake.

Police say the 17-year-old Novi resident was arrested without incident. Evidence collected links him to 35+ car break-ins in the area. He was released to his guardian while the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office Juvenile Division reviews the case.

Farmington Hills Police are reminding residents to lock their car doors and remove valuables to prevent similar crimes. Anyone with information is asked to call 248-871-2610
