Video captures police chase of teens who carjacked DoorDash driver in Southfield

2 teens are facing charges after allegedly robbing a DoorDash driver in Southfield and leading police on a high-speed chase into Detroit.

According to Southfield Police, the victim was delivering food to an Apartment near 12 Mile around 4:40 a.m. Saturday when two masked suspects approached him and stole his Dodge Charger.

The 20-year-old victim, Joshua, quickly called 911 and gave officers a detailed description of the suspects and vehicle. Police say this helped them spot the stolen Charger and a black Jeep — also reported stolen out of Detroit — speeding south on the Lodge Freeway.

Officers began pursuing the vehicles. The Jeep got away near Southfield Road and 8 Mile, but police say they continued following the Charger into Detroit, reaching speeds up to 125 mph.

As the pursuit continued onto the Davison Freeway, officers performed a PIT maneuver near Woodward Avenue, causing the Charger to crash into an embankment. No one was injured.

Inside the vehicle, officers found the victim’s wallet and ghost gun. Both suspects — identified as 18-year-old Derek Butler and a 17-year-old from Detroit — were arrested on the scene.

Both suspects face multiple felonies, including car-jacking charges.

Southfield Chief Elvin Barren praised Joshua for his bravery, saying he not only stayed calm during the incident but still finished the delivery after the incident.
