Teen who led cops on chase causes crash that left mom dead, dad & 2-year-old critically injured

A mother is dead, her husband and their 2-year-old son are in critical condition after a crash in Sterling Heights late Saturday night.

The crash happened at around 10:00 p.m. in the area of 16 Mile and Van Dyke.

Sterling Heights Officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a tan Chevrolet Equinox, at Van Dyke Ave. and 15 Mile Rd. The suspect vehicle fled the traffic stop north on Van Dyke Ave. eventually running a red light at Metropolitan Pkwy. Upon doing so, the suspect vehicle struck a black GMC Terrain which was traveling through the intersection, east on Metropolitan Pkwy.

The GMC Terrain was occupied by a 34-year-old male, a 31-year-old female, and their 2-year-old son, all from Sterling Heights. All three individuals were transported to local hospitals in critical condition.

Unfortunately, the 31-year-old mother died of her injuries. The 34-year-old father and 2-year-old boy remain in critical condition.

The suspect driver of the Tan Equinox was a 16-year-old male from Detroit. The suspect was uninjured and taken into custody on location.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Sterling Heights Police.
