A teen has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of an Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy.
18-year-old Karim Blake Moore was charged Wednesday with three counts of lying to a police officer after prosecutors said he allegedly originally wasn’t truthful to police.
“He has admitted that he bailed out of the vehicle after shots were fired and he knew that they shot at the police,” said Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Penney during the arraignment. “The defendant, during his interrogation, was repeatedly asked ‘why aren’t you giving us more information here?’ He indicated something about being concerned about his safety in the community once he got out of prison.”
The two other suspects are being held after having their bond revoked in another case out of Oakland County. They were allegedly arrested after fleeing from police in March of this year, and one of them was found with a gun. The car they were in was allegedly also carjacked.
The shooting of the deputy occurred Saturday night on Park Grove, near Gratiot and McNichols. According to officials, Detective Brad Reckling, who was in plain clothes, was following several suspects in a recently stolen 2022 Equinox from Oakland County.
The car came to an abrupt stop, and one occupant exited and began firing shots at the detective. Detective Reckling was struck in the head and chest and was later pronounced dead.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard stated that the detective was ambushed after the suspects realized they were being followed. Three suspects were taken into custody the same night. Detective Brad Reckling was a husband and father of children aged 5, 4, and 1, with another baby on the way.
