Teen, 4-year-old identified as victims in shooting at Detroit park

A community is mourning after a shooting at a park near Denby High School on Friday evening claimed the lives of two people — including a young child.

The victims have been identified by family as 4-year-old Samir Grubbs and 18-year-old Davyion. A 17-year-old male was also shot and remains hospitalized.

The shooting happened near Kelly and Morang on Detroit’s east side. Police say it started as an argument that escalated into shooting. Two people have been taken into custody.

Samir’s aunt, Bernice Shanon, wrote on social media: “Departed this life too soon, he just wanted to play. Please say his name: Samir Josiah Grubbs. Not just the 4-year-old. Gone too soon. Forever 4.”

A local pastor, Rev. W.J. Rideout III, also shared his heartbreak: “In all my 33 years of pastoring, this is the 3rd baby I have to eulogize. The violence has to stop. Innocent children are falling due to senseless-killing.”

Davyion’s mother posted an emotional tribute, saying her son acted heroically: “They started shooting and my son pushed his friend out the way and took the bullets to the chest… he saved his friend’s life. My son always was saving the world.”

Davyion’s former dean, Toson Knight, also shared a heartfelt message:

“Davyion was one of my students. He rode his skateboard to school, unbothered by what anyone thought. That was him — fearless, free, and always true to himself.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit police.
