A man has been charged in the murder of well-known Dr. Devon Hoover— more than a year after his killing.
34-year-old Desmond Burks was charged today with first-degree murder, larceny charges, and using a computer to commit a crime. Prosecutors say Burks was in an intimate relationship with Dr. Hoover.
On April 23, 2023, 53-year-old Hoover was discovered shot to death, his body wrapped in a sheet and hidden in the attic of his Detroit Boston Edison home.
The discovery was made during a welfare check after Hoover did not show up for a planned weekend visit with his family in Indiana.
Authorities also found his car abandoned on the west side of the city. Multiple items were stolen from his home, including designer watches, Range Rover, cell phones, and wallet, and fraudulent payments were made through the doctor’s cards.
The suspect charged in the case, Desmond, was also charged in another murder that happened on the city’s west side on April 17, 2024. This case is unrelated to Dr. Hoover’s murder.
Desmond was driving on W. Chicago near Greenfield Road when a 67-year-old man bumped into the back of his car.
Desmond got out of his car and got into a fight with the elderly man after the crash. He then punched him, which eventually led to his death. He was charged with second-degree murder after the incident.
