Suspect in custody After Woman Raped at Gunpoint Inside Park Porta-Potty, Detroit police say

Detroit police say a man is in custody after a woman reported being-raped inside a portable restroom at Van Antwerp Park, near Wyoming and Outer Drive.

On September 1, at approximately 9:55 p.m., the victim was sitting in her vehicle in the area of St. Martin and Pinehurst waiting for a friend when she was approached by the suspect.

Commander Rebecca McKay of the Detroit Police Department’s Major Crimes Division explained what happened:

“The assailant produced a handgun and forced our victim from her vehicle and then at gunpoint walked her toward Van Antwerp Park. He walked her toward a port-a-pot and told her she needed to get into the port-a-pot. She refused, and upon refusing, he fired a single shot into the ground. Our victim then complied and got into the port-a-pot and complied with his orders, and that is when he SA her. When he was finished, he fled the area.”

Officers located a spent casing from the shot fired. Technicians processed the area. After further investigation, a suspect was identified and taken into custody.

McKay said:

“The suspect was located through some social media posts that were being posted. We did show a photo array to our victim and she did pick him out of a photo array.”

Police confirmed the victim went to the hospital and a kit was performed.

Investigators are also reviewing whether he may be linked to other cases. The case remains under active investigation.
