Southfield man gets up to 60 years in prison for fatally shooting 8-year-old sister for “talking back”

A Southfield man was sentenced Tuesday after he murdered his 8-year-old sister.

Gyasi Stribling, 24, was sentenced Tuesday, May 27, to 40 to 60 years in prison for first-degree murder.

Stribling shot his younger sister Bailei Singleton in the head inside their apartment at 12 North Apartments in January 2021. Authorities said he shot her because she was “talking back” to him.

After the shooting, he lied to Southfield police, claiming there had been a break-in attempt and that his sister was shot during it. He also tried to hide the weapon used.

“Bailei Singleton should still be here with us today,” said Prosecutor McDonald. “Her murder was a tragedy for her family. It’s unconscionable that anyone, let alone an 8 year old child, could be murdered by a relative and in their own home over the slightest of disagreements. This case is, unfortunately, a reminder of how g.n violence is a public health epidemic that can end a life in an instant.”
