Royal Oak Man Charged with Murder After Maintenance Worker Killed in Shooting

A man is facing serious charges after a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in Royal Oak.

It happened around noon on Thursday, July 31, at the Devon Park Apartments on Crooks Road. Police say several people called 911 to report a fight and gunfire in the parking lot.

When officers got there, they found the suspect, 32-year-old Nathaniel Joshua-Olson Rockwell, who lives at the complex. He was arrested without any problems.

A man was found shot about 100 feet away. Paramedics tried to save him, but he died at the scene. The victim was 65-year-old Gregory Hill of Southfield. He worked as a maintenance man at the apartments and was on the job when he was shot.

Witnesses told police that Rockwell got into a loud argument with another tenant, ran to his car to get a gun, and fired. The other person ran away. Hill was nearby but not part of the argument.

Rockwell is now charged with:

First Degree Murder (life in prison without parole) Three counts of Felony Firearm (2-year felonies) Two counts of Felonious Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (4-year felonies)

He was arraigned on August 3 in Novi and denied bond. His next court date is August 11.
