Police Rescue Missing 78-Year-Old with Dementia After 10 Hours in Woods in Sterling Heights

A 78-year-old man with dementia was found alive in a wooded area of Dodge Park after an intense 10-hour search.

The man had been reported missing earlier that day, prompting a large search effort by the Sterling Heights Police Department. As it got dark, the Michigan State Police were called in to help. They sent one of their helicopters, Trooper 2, to scan the area from above.

Around 9:30 p.m., the helicopter crew spotted someone off the trail. Officers on the ground responded and found the man about 100 yards into the woods. He was lying in mud under a fallen tree and heavy branches and was too weak to walk.

Officers carried him out of the woods and placed him in the department’s utility vehicle. He was taken to Farmstead Park and then to the hospital by medical crews. He is in stable condition and expected to fully recover.
