Police arrest suspect who left scene of crash that left off-duty DPD cop dead

Police have just arrested the suspected driver involved in a hit-and-run crash that left an off-duty Detroit police officer dead early Sunday morning.

The driver was arrested during a traffic stop on Greenfield near McNichols by The Fugitive Apprehension Services Team (FAST), a joint operation by the Wayne County Executive Office and Detroit Police.

The crash occurred just in the area of Hoover & Greiner, near 7 Mile.

The off-duty officer died in the crash after being struck by a suspect in a van who made an improper turn. The driver involved in the crash fled the scene.

The officer just finished his shift and was heading home for the day.

Officer Cameron Richardson graduated from the academy in June and reported to the 9th precinct. Before being an officer, Richardson served in the U.S. Army for 10 years before retiring.

He leaves behind two children aged 12 & 14.
