Person dies after falling down 5-story elevator shaft while exploring abandoned Detroit hospital

A 21-year-old man from Macomb County died after falling down a five-story elevator shaft while ‘exploring’ the abandoned Southwest Detroit Hospital.

A group of friends, including some juveniles, had entered the vacant building located on Michigan Ave near I-75 at around 1:30 a.m. The man was inside the abandoned hospital when he fell down the open shaft.

Emergency crews were called to the scene and rescued the man from the bottom of the shaft. He was rushed to the hospital but did not survive his injuries.

The building was recently set for demolition to make way for a new soccer stadium project.

The investigation is ongoing.
