Parole absconder jumps into Detroit River in attempt to escape officers

A parole absconder was arrested Monday evening in Ecorse after trying to escape police by jumping into the Detroit River.

Michigan’s Absconder Recovery Unit got a tip that the man, who had paroled out of Washtenaw County, was staying at a home in Ecorse. Investigators saw him at the house and tried to arrest him with help from Ecorse Police.

The man took off on a bicycle, riding to a park near Southfield and Jefferson. He then jumped into the river and tried to swim to Mud Island.

He later swam back to shore and was taken into custody. After being checked at the hospital, he was lodged on his warrant.
