Metro Detroit law enforcement agencies will be participating in “Operation Ghost Rider,” a targeted effort aimed at cutting down on distracted driving.
The initiative uses unmarked officers to spot drivers who are texting, holding phones, or engaging in other distractions behind the wheel.
Once a violation is observed, the officer communicates with nearby patrol units in marked cars to make the traffic stop.
Several departments are teaming up for the enforcement push, including Michigan State Police, the sheriff’s offices in Oakland and Macomb counties, and local agencies from Auburn Hills, Chesterfield Township, Clinton Township, Shelby Township, Sterling Heights, Taylor, Troy, and more.
Police say the main focus of Operation Ghost Rider is not just issuing tickets, but encouraging safer habits on the road to protect all motorists.
