Off duty Detroit police officer dies after hit & run crash

An off-duty Detroit police officer who died in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning has been identified as 32-year-old Officer Cameron Richardson.

Detroit police Chief Todd Bettison provided an update on Sunday afternoon. The crash occurred just after midnight Sunday in the area of Hoover & Greiner, near 7 Mile.

The off-duty officer died in the crash after being struck by a suspect in a van who made an improper turn. The driver involved in the crash fled the scene. Police have identified the driver and are asking that he turn himself in.

The officer just finished his shift and was heading home for the day.

Officer Richardson graduated from the academy in June and reported to the 9th precinct. Before being an officer, Richardson served in the U.S. Army for 10 years before retiring.

He leaves behind two children aged 12 & 14. The investigation is ongoing.
