Oak Park Police Ice Cream Truck Serves Free Treats While Building Community Ties

Benicia Ciara, TMDN

Yes, you read that right-the Oak Park Police Department is serving free ice cream straight from their very own truck nearly every day.

They are metro Detroits only department with an ice cream truck. Director of Public Safety Steve Cooper shared that the idea was brought to him about six years ago.

“What started as a way to connect with children quickly gained popularity among adults and the elderly as well,” Cooper said.

The truck, which is stocked thanks to Prairie Farms, has become a staple during warm months.

“When it’s warm out, this truck runs nonstop—and we’re happy for that.”

Beyond the smiles and sweet treats, the truck is also a vehicle for community engagement. “This program has shown that we’re human—just like anyone else,” Cooper said.

The idea has since caught on, with other departments across Michigan launching similar efforts.

But Cooper is proud of Oak Park’s role as a trailblazer: “I want to stick out our chest and pump Oak Park up—we were the first in Michigan.”

If you’re out and about in Oak Park, chances are you’ll spot the ice cream truck. And when you do, you’re likely to be greeted by Officers Steve Arbenowske and John Dean, friendly faces from the Community Resource Officers Team, who help lead in handing out sweet treats and smiles.

And with a special radio system donated by resident Steven Gold, the truck doesn’t just deliver ice cream-it brings music, energy, and a whole lot of community spirit to every stop.
