Nighttime Gratiot Enforcement Results in More Than 1,000 Tickets for Speeding & Violations

Detroit police are stepping up nighttime traffic enforcement along Gratiot Avenue.

The department’s specialized traffic unit has been running weekend enforcement, issuing more than 1,000 tickets to drivers for speeding, reckless driving, and other violations. We joined officers for a weekend ride-along to see the crackdown in action.

Police say the goal is to prevent tragedies like those seen in recent months:

• July 30: One woman and one man were killed at Gratiot and French.

• August 23: Two children died at 7 Mile and Gratiot.

• September 6: One woman died on Gratiot near St. Aubin.

• September 9: One man died on Gratiot near 6 Mile.

• September 20: Two people were killed near Gratiot and Mt. Elliott.

The department says these daytime & nighttime details will continue throughout the city.
