Starting today, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin turning on ramp meters at eight freeway entrance ramps along I-96.
These meters are stop-and-go traffic lights that help control how many vehicles enter the freeway at once, aiming to reduce congestion and crashes.
Locations with ramp meters include:
• Wixom Road to westbound I-96
• Southbound Novi Road to eastbound I-96
• Southbound Novi Road to westbound I-96
• Northbound Novi Road to eastbound I-96
• Northbound Novi Road to westbound I-96
• Southbound Milford Road to eastbound I-96
• Southbound Milford Road to westbound I-96
• Northbound Milford Road to eastbound I-96
Once active, drivers will need to:
• Form two lanes on the ramp
• Stop at the white line
• Wait for a green light to proceed — only one car per green
If a ramp meter is flashing yellow, it means it’s not active and drivers can merge as normal. However, running a red light at an active ramp meter is considered a traffic violation.
MDOT says this setup helps space out cars entering the freeway, reducing the need for sudden braking and giving drivers already on I-96 more room to adjust.
