New poll shows majority of voters would prefer an independent for Michigan Governor

A recent poll shows that a majority of Michigan voters are open to electing an independent governor.

Conducted by the Detroit Regional Chamber and the Glengariff Group, Inc., the survey found that 63.4% agreed with the idea that neither major political party is producing effective candidates.

Respondents expressed support for electing an independent governor who would be required to collaborate with both parties to achieve results, even if it meant their preferred party lost the race.

In December, Detroit Mayor @mikeeduggan was one of the first candidate for the 2026 governor’s race to announce his candidacy as an independent.
