New Michigan bill would let renters make repairs at landlords’ expense

Michigan lawmakers are considering a new set of bills that could empower renters to handle repairs in their homes.

Under the proposed legislation, tenants would have the right to fix urgent issues—like broken furnaces or water leaks—and deduct the cost from their rent if landlords fail to act.

The Tenant Empowerment Package(TEP) are still in the early stages.

“I introduced these bills last year because renters across Michigan deserve safe, fair, and habitable housing, and this doesn’tchange just because the legislation didn’t make it to the governor’s desk. I’llkeep fighting until that becomes a reality,” said Sen. Sarah Anthony.
