New bill would restrict or ban cellphone usage for K-12 students across Michigan

Michigan lawmakers are discussing a new bill that could introduce statewide restrictions/ban on cellphone use for K-12 students.

House Bill 5921, introduced by Rep. Mark Tisdel, seeks to reduce distractions in classrooms by limiting when and where students can use their phones.

The proposed bill would:
K-5: Would not allow devices on school property.
Middle school: Only before and after school.
High school: no devices during instructional time

Currently, cellphone policies vary by district across Michigan.

One of the major pushbacks against the bill is if there’s an emergency, how would students contact 911 or family. The bill is currently under review.
