New bill would require schools in Michigan to teach water safety education to help prevent drownings

State Representative Donni Steele (R-Orion Township) has introduced House Bill 4477, aiming to implement water safety education in Michigan schools.

The proposed legislation would require the Department of Education to develop a comprehensive water safety program for students, focusing on essential skills like proper use of flotation devices, supervision, and swimming techniques.

“We live in a state surrounded by water in nearly every direction,” Steele said. “It’s vital to the welfare of our children that we teach them how to stay safe and be responsible in our lakes, rivers, ponds, and pools.”

House Bill 4477 has been referred to the Committee on Education and Workforce and is awaiting a hearing.
