A deadly crash shut down westbound I-696 for several hours overnight after a series of collisions involving two cars and a motorcycle.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday near Campbell Road in Royal Oak.
Michigan State Police say a 30-year-old woman from Clio was speeding in a BMW through a construction zone when she rear-ended a Nissan sedan. The impact sent the Nissan crashing into the right shoulder wall, where it came to a stop. The BMW then slammed into the left median wall and was left disabled under the Campbell Road bridge.
Moments later, a 20-year-old man from Ypsilanti riding a Suzuki sport motorcycle was reportedly weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed when he struck the back of the disabled BMW. He was ejected from the motorcycle and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Troopers say the BMW driver showed signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests. She was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. Her case is pending review by the prosecutor’s office.
No other injuries were reported. Westbound I-696 was closed for about four hours during the investigation.
