Michigan to Pause November SNAP Benefits due to federal shutdown

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has been told by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to temporarily pause November SNAP benefits due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The pause could affect about 1.4 million Michigan residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. The USDA says funding for the program may be limited until the shutdown is resolved.

SNAP provides monthly food assistance to help families and individuals buy groceries.MDHHS says it will issue updates as soon as federal funding becomes available again.

Residents who need food assistance in the meantime can:

• Call 2-1-1 or visit Find Help – Michigan 2-1-1 for local food programs.

• Visit the Food Bank Council of Michigan to locate nearby food banks and hunger relief resources.

People can also check MI Bridges or contact their local MDHHS office for the latest updates on their SNAP benefits.
