Michigan State Fair to remain open with extra security measures after shooting

The Michigan State Fair will remain open today and Monday with heightened security and reduced hours, according to an announcement made this morning.

“Following a review of the incident with law enforcement officials, community leaders, the Michigan State Fair operations team, and the Executive Committee, the Michigan State Fair will continue to operate with an increased police presence and adjustments to closing hours and policies. The Box Office and entry gates will close at 6:00 p.m., and the Fairgrounds will close at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. For the rest of the fair, all attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to enter,” the fair announced.

The shooting occurred around 10:00 p.m. in the parking lot southwest of the Suburban Collection Showplace. Two victims, both 14 years old, were shot. One of them later died at the hospital.

Police say the incident appears to have been targeted, stemming from an ongoing argument. A suspect has not yet been identified.

“Investigation reveals the two victims took an Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills and then another Uber from there to the Fair with some friends. It appears this incident may have resulted from an argument that occurred earlier in the week in other communities, which continued through to Saturday night at the Fair parking lot,” the city of Novi said in a release.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100
