Michigan researchers using AI to interpret what your dog is trying to tell you

Ever wondered what your dog is trying to say? Researchers at the University of #Michigan are using artificial intelligence (AI) to understand the meaning behind dog barks, distinguishing between playful and aggressive tones.

“By using speech processing models trained on human speech, our research opens a new window into understanding dog barks,” said Rada Mihalcea, director of U-M’s AI Laboratory.

The UOFM team repurposed a human speech analysis model, Wav2Vec2, and applied it to a dataset of dog barks from 74 dogs of various breeds, ages, and sexes.

The study discovered that AI models initially developed for human speech can serve as a foundation for creating new systems aimed at understanding animal communication. 🎥: @uofmichigan
