Michigan health officials confirm detection of Bird Flu in Oakland County

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has confirmed the first 2025 case of avian influenza (HPAI) in Oakland County.

The virus was detected in a backyard flock following testing by the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This marks the second confirmed case in the county since the virus was first reported in Michigan in 2022, according to health officials. The department did not specify which city.

The affected premises have been placed under quarantine, and the infected birds will be euthanized to prevent further spread, according to a news release.

The virus is a highly contagious that spreads through contact with infected birds, contaminated equipment, and even on the shoes and clothing of caretakers.
