Metro Detroiters will have to dial 10 digits to complete phone calls as 313 area code run out

People in Metro Detroit will soon have to dial all 10 digits when making local calls. The Michigan Public Service Commission says the change begins October 7, 2025. After that date, any call within the 313 area will need the area code plus the number. Seven-digit calls will no longer go through, even if the person you’re calling is nearby.

The switch is happening because 313 numbers are running out.

The 313 code has been in use since 1947, but nearly every number has been taken. To meet demand, the state approved a new 679 area code.

Both 313 and 679 will cover the same places: Detroit, Allen Park, Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Ecorse, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Inkster, Lincoln Park, Redford Township, River Rouge, Taylor and more.
