Man charged after fatally shooting transgender woman during meet-up at apartment, police say

A 29-year-old transgender woman, Tahiry Broom, was found fatally shot early Sunday outside the Riverstone Apartments in Southfield. The alleged suspect was charged this week with murder, Southfield police announced in a news conference.

Officers responded to reports of an unresponsive person lying in the snow. Upon arrival, they discovered Broom had been shot in the head, police said.

Police arrested 28-year-old Robert Louis Ridges III at the MGM Grand casino in Detroit on February 9. Ridges fled the scene in Broom’s vehicle and was later linked to the crime. A search warrant at his home uncovered a stolen g.n believed to have been used in the shooting.

Ridges was arraigned Wednesday in 46th District Court on charges of second-degree murder.

Authorities say Broom was a s.x worker who was meeting up with the suspect at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9.

Police are encouraging anyone with additional information to contact the Southfield Police Department. Watch above for more details.
