Madison Heights couple charged after 9-year-old shoots self with unsecured gun

An Oakland County couple has been charged after a 9-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with an unsecured gun.

The incident occurred on Friday around 1:00 p.m. on the 30000 block of Palmer, near 12 Mile and I-75.

An investigation revealed that the 9-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the left hand with an unsecured handgun while at a residence.

The child is currently in stable condition.

The stepfather, 27-year-old Jacob Zachary Gean, and the mother, 25-year-old Jessie Gean, have been charged with a firearms-safe storage violation involving a minor present, resulting in serious impairment of a body function—a 10-year felony.

They were arraigned on August 25, 2024, in the 43rd District Court in Madison Heights before Magistrate Mitchell and were given a $50,000 personal bond.
