Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced a strict new policy that aims to send a clear message to drivers who flee from law enforcement: no plea deals. Anyone arrested for Fleeing and Eluding in Macomb County will no longer be offered reduced charges.
The policy shift comes in response to a growing number of deadly and life-altering crashes involving drivers trying to outrun police.
Several high-profile crashes:
• On May 24, 2025, a woman died when her car was hit by a suspect fleeing Warren police.
• In August 2023, a teen fleeing police caused a crash that left a mother and her unborn child dead, and left her husband with a traumatic brain injury.
• In April 2021, a 20-year-old died after crashing a stolen Jeep Cherokee during a pursuit.
Lucido is also calling on lawmakers—both in Macomb County and across Michigan—to join him in strengthening penalties through bipartisan legislation.
‘Run from the Law, Walk to a Cell!’” Lucido said.
Under Michigan law, Fleeing and Eluding is already a felony that can bring two to 15 years in prison and fines of $2,000 to $10,000. But Lucido says the current law is missing a key element—mandatory jail time. He’s now pushing for changes to the statute, including required prison terms.
