A Detroit woman says she was denied a Lyft ride because of her weight, and now her attorneys are filing a suit.
The incident, which was caught on camera, shows the driver refusing to provide service because of Dank Demoss’s size.
Her legal team, Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan announced they are filing a lawsuit against Lyft. In a statement, the attorneys condemned the driver’s actions:
“Fat shaming is illegal in Michigan, and no one should be denied a public service because of their weight. What happened to our client was not only illegal but also dangerous. If she had no transportation, she could have been left stranded in the cold or in a hazardous situation. This type of behavior could lead to injury or worse and is completely unacceptable.”
I was discriminated against.… I stand for my people, my community, and making change—not just for me but for everyone,” @dankdemoss said
Lyft issued a response in the comments of her Instagram post:
“We’re disheartened to look at this driver’s unacceptable behavior. Please DM us at your earliest convenience for additional support. We’d like to address this as soon as possible. Please know that we don’t condone discrimination of any kind, and we’re really committed to making things right for you. Please reach out to us directly so we can investigate this matter further and ensure it is addressed appropriately and as soon as possible. We’re looking forward to hearing from you soon.”
