Detroit Police Internal Affairs has launched an investigation after Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was released following a traffic stop in October of this year.
Williams’ brother was driving during the traffic stop and informed officers of two g.ns in the car. He did have a valid CPL.
One g.n though, was registered to Jameson, and was found in the front seat. He did not have a concealed carry permit (CPL). Bodycam footage captured Williams identifying himself as a Lions player several times during the arrest and stating he had it for protection because he lived in Detroit.
After discussions among a Sgt. and higher-ranking commanding officers, one who recognized who he was immediately, Williams was released without charges. The case has now been sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges.
“Let it be clear: no one in the City of Detroit is above the law. Anyone who commits a crime will be held accountable, regardless of their position or status,” Detroit police said in a statement to MDN.
The Lions issued a statement noting that Williams notified them of the incident and that he was released without a citation. They added that Williams has hired an attorney and that they will not comment further.
Williams is currently serving a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Performance-Enhancing Substances policy.
