Henry Ford Health, pistons, MSU collab to expand Detroit hospital, new research center, 600+ housing, jobs, retail space, grants & more

Henry Ford Health, Michigan State University, and the Detroit Pistons are working on a new development that will bring a major expansion of Henry Ford Hospital, a new research center, housing units, and retail/ community space.

The proposed project includes:

▪️Expansion of Henry Ford Hospital with new one million+ sq ft patient tower, expanded emergency department, urgent care, support services, and utility infrastructure

▪️ New cutting-edge 335,000 sq ft Research Center for Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences

▪️ Creation of 600-plus housing units (20% affordable housing) and 33,000 sq ft of retail and community space located in two new residential / mixed-use buildings and converting One Ford Place to a residential/mixed-use building.

▪️ Two new parking structures with ~2,000 total spaces

▪️ New public recreation and green spaces

The project will also benefit residents not only by providing better health care services but also by the developer’s proposed funding for:

▪️Home Repair Fund: Developers will donate $2 million to a fund for repairing homes for people in the area. Rental Assistance Fund that would provide a $500,000 contribution to a rental assistance fund.

▪️ Community Micro-Grants. $300,000 for community organizations.

▪️Medical Resources for High Schools: Northwestern High School and University Prep with medical supplies.

▪️Tuition-Free Scholarships: Fifty full-ride, four-year scholarships to Michigan State University for seniors at University Prep and Northwestern High School, to be granted over ten years. Will also fund Scholarship competition and Detroit Pistons STEM events.

▪️Improve bus stops and green spaces, conduct traffic studies, and more. It will also provide 735 permanent jobs.

UPDATE: The Detroit City Council has approved the community benefits deal for the Future of Health Project 6-3.
