Hazy Skies Blanket Metro Detroit as Canadian Wildfire Smoke Triggers Air Quality Alert

Smoke from Canadian wildfires rolled into Metro Detroit, turning skies hazy and prompting officials to warn residents to take precautions.

Video from Friday afternoon shows thick smoke drifting over. The Detroit Skyline was not visible.

An air quality alert through midnight tonight for Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Washtenaw, St. Clair, Lenawee, and Monroe counties. Levels of particles in the air have climbed to a point where people with breathing or heart conditions, older adults, children and pregnant individuals are at greater risk if they spend long periods outside.

What you can do now:
• Stay inside with windows and doors closed.
• Postpone outdoor plans until air quality improves.
• Consider an N95 mask for brief trips outdoors; simple face coverings won’t stop smoke particles.
