Some Metro Detroit residents could see higher water and sewer bills after the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) approved a rate increase during a meeting on Wednesday.
The decision raises water rates by an average of 5.9% and sewer rates by 4.5%.
GLWA, which serves 112 communities across Southeast Michigan, cited rising operational costs, maintenance, and the need for infrastructure improvements as key reasons for the rate adjustments.
The decision has drawn criticism from many residents and local leaders, who worry about the financial strain on households. Some cities may choose to absorb part of the hike, while others may transfer the full cost to residents.
