Ex-Michigan QB Coach Charged After Allegedly Hacking, Downloading Intimate Photos of Student-Athletes & More

Former University of Michigan Co-Offensive Coordinator & QB coach Matthew Weiss, 42, of Ann Arbor, has been indicted on 24 federal charges.

According to the indictment, from 2015 to January 2023, Weiss gained unauthorized access to student-athlete databases maintained by a third-party vendor. These databases contained personal and medical data for over 150,000 student-athletes from more than 100 colleges and universities.

Using this information and additional online research, he accessed the social media, email, and cloud storage accounts of more than 3,300 individuals, including student-athletes, alumni, and other students.

Once inside these accounts, Weiss downloaded personal and intimate digital content, including private photographs and videos.

“Weiss researched the targeted athletes on the internet. Months-and in some cases years— after he gained access to certain accounts, he returned to those accounts searching for additional photos and videos. Weiss kept notes on individuals whose photographs and videos that he
viewed, including notes commenting on their bodies and their sexual preferences,” read the criminal complaint.

Weiss faces charges of 14 counts of unauthorized computer access and 10 counts of aggravated identity theft.

Weiss was dismissed from the University of Michigan football program in January 2023.
