A man believed to be connected to a triple homicide on Detroit’s west side was charged with federal weapons charge Tuesday morning.
The incident began in the early hours of Sunday morning, April 6, when first responders were called to a vehicle fire. Inside the burning car, they discovered the bodies of three individuals believed to be: a woman, a 9-year-old girl, and the woman’s mother. The alleged suspect, Edward Redding, is the ex-boyfriend.
Investigators allege the man shot his ex-girlfriend and her mother, then fatally stabbed the 9-year-old girl before dumping their bodies & setting the vehicle on fire in an attempt to conceal the crime.
While local charges are still pending, federal authorities have moved forward with a criminal complaint. Edward Redding, recently released on parole for prior violent offenses, including armed robbery & car-jacking, is now facing a federal charge for being a felon in possession of a weapon.
According to an affidavit filed in federal court, investigators identified Redding as a suspect after reviewing license plate reader data. That second vehicle, a silver 2009 Saturn Vue, was registered to Redding.
Troopers located the vehicle near River Rouge, but Redding tried to flee. A chase ensued along I-75, during which Redding reportedly ran red lights, drove against traffic, and nearly struck multiple cars. His vehicle eventually crashed, and he was taken into custody after a short foot chase.
Inside the car, troopers recovered a revolver, along with documents with Redding’s name.
The investigation is ongoing.
