As the leaves start to fall, many homeowners are climbing ladders, trimming trees and digging in their yards. But safety experts say there’s one big danger you might overlook: power lines.

DTE Energy warns that one of the most serious risks isn’t just falling off a ladder, it’s getting too close to electric wires.

“First, look up,” DTE advises. “Know where the power lines are and stay at least 25 feet away. Always assume any wire you see is liveand dangerous.”

If you rent equipment like a lift, keep it 25 feet away from power lines, even at its highest reach. The same goes for tree trimming. If branches touch or hang near power lines, call a professional instead of trying to do it yourself.

Call MISS DIG at 8-1-1 before digging. There may be electric or gas lines underground and hitting one can cause serious injuries and damage.

If you hire a contractor, don’t assume they’ll check for wires. Remind them to stay at least 25 feet away from power linesand electrical equipment when performing work.

Treat every wire as if it’s a live power line, even ones you think might be for internet or phone service. If you spot a wire on the ground, stay far away and report it right away using the DTE Energy app, at outage.dteenergy.com or by calling 800.477.4747.

Bottom line: Before you climb, cut or dig this fall, stop and look around. A few minutes of caution can prevent serious accidents.
