Meet Deontae – once a trainee, now a team leader.
When Deontae joined DTE Energy’s Energy Efficiency Academy, he was looking for more than a job; he wanted a career that could support his family, offer long-term stability and provide purpose. What he found was a hands-on program that provided him with knowledge, the opportunity to earn nationally recognized certifications, and a sense of purpose in his work by helping people enhance their homes. Now, he’s leading teams in the field, encouraging others to find purpose in their work.
“Being able to see the next cohort come through and their way of learning—it’s all coming back full circle,” said Deontae. “The program is going to put you on your way to success. It’s not just work anymore, you’re going into people’s houses, changing a lot of things out and comforting them in their own living space.”
Deontae says the Academy experience, and DTE’s investment in the community, have been great for the neighborhoods and with 90% of eligible graduates landing jobs, the Energy Efficiency Academy is proving what’s possible when you invest in people.
DTE’s Energy Efficiency Academy is a paid, hands-on training program created in partnership with Walker-Miller Energy Services. It’s open to anyone – whether you’re starting out or ready to take your career to the next level. The program is helping more Michiganders build careers in clean energy that offer stability, purpose and opportunities for growth.
Program participants earn certifications and receive real-world training experience in fields, including:

• Electrical work
