The company announced an $800,000 donation to the United Way for Southeastern Michigan to support low-income customers who can’t afford their energy bills. The funds will help the elderly, unemployed, underemployed, and people with disabilities who have already qualified for energy assistance this year.
According to United Way, the need for support has increased 72% from the last program year, creating a funding gap.
While new state funding for energy assistance is set to begin October 1, DTE’s donation will help cover the needs of families who can’t wait that long.
“Many Michigan families face genuine financial hardships and are struggling to pay their bills. This donation will help us support Michiganders accessing the help they need to pay their energy bills,” said Jeff Miles, Vice President of Community Impact, United Way for Southeastern Michigan. “While MEAP recently expanded assistance amounts and eligibility requirements, this donation helps address current gaps and keep families enrolled now.”
More than 5,000 people were enrolled in the Low-Income Self-Sufficiency Plan during the 2024–2025 program year, and this donation is expected to support around 6,400 customers.
