Drivers will now get alerts when Detroit fire trucks, ambulances, or police are approaching

Detroit has become one of the largest cities in the nation to adopt HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud technology across its fire, EMS and police fleets.

The system is designed to reduce accidents involving emergency vehicles and improve response times.

When an emergency vehicle has its lights activated, nearby drivers receive a notification, giving them more time to move out of the way.

The Detroit Fire Department ran a 10-month pilot program before the rollout. During that time, more than 100,000 alerts were sent to drivers while fire crews were responding to emergencies. Officials say the expansion to all fire trucks, ambulances, and medical units will provide an added layer of protection for both first responders and motorists.

Detroit Police also tested the technology earlier this year on nine patrol cars in the 5th and 9th Precincts. That pilot resulted in more than 17,000 alerts. The department plans to expand it to every patrol vehicle citywide.

City officials say adopting Safety Cloud is part of Detroit’s broader investment in technology and innovation aimed at lowering response times, reducing crashes, and keeping residents safe.
