A Michigan State Police trooper was injured Sunday morning when a vehicle lost control and slammed into his patrol car along westbound I-96 near Grand River Avenue.
Officials say around 11:00 a.m., a Metro South trooper was investigating a one-car crash on the left shoulder of the freeway when a 55-year-old Detroit man driving a Jeep Cherokee lost control and hit the back of the patrol car. The impact pushed the cruiser into the original crash vehicle.
The trooper, who was inside the patrol car at the time, was taken to a local hospital by Detroit Fire and EMS for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Two passengers from the Jeep were also hospitalized with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The freeway was temporarily closed for cleanup and investigation.
“It is important for drivers to remember to slow down in wet weather,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “This particular driver was not only driving too fast for road conditions, he also had three of his four tires worn below the wear bars which also led him to lose control and crash.”
