Driver ejected after crash on I-96 in Detroit

A rollover crash early Friday morning shut down a section of I-96 after the driver was ejected.

According to Michigan State Police, the crash occurred around 1:00 a.m. on the ramp from eastbound I-96 Local to Southfield Freeway. Troopers arrived to find a 30-year-old Detroit man, the driver of a GMC Yukon, ejected from his vehicle and lying in the roadway. Emergency responders rushed him to a local hospital, where his condition is unknown.

Preliminary findings indicate the driver lost control of the SUV, struck the center median, and rolled multiple times before coming to a stop in the left and center lanes of the freeway.

Investigators believe speed and failure to wear a seatbelt contributed to the severity of the crash.

“This crash is an example of what we are seeing on our roadways,” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw. “A driver going too fast and losing control of their vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt. Please keep your speeds down and wear your seatbelt no matter where you are seated in the car.”

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
