Detroit’s Comeback Continues: Population Grows for 2nd Year Straight, Census Data Shows

New U.S. Census data released today put Detroit’s population at 645,705, an increase of 12,487 since last year’s report, Mayor Mike Duggan announced.

That gain pushes Detroit past Portland, Oregon, to become the 26th largest city in the United States, closing in on Boston at 25th.

Detroit’s growth breaks down into two parts:
• 6,791 new residents added in 2024 alone
• 5,696 Detroiters who were undercounted in Census estimates from 2021 through 2023

In 2024, Detroit’s 1.1% growth rate outpaced both Michigan’s statewide increase of 0.6% and the national average of 0.98%. It more than tripled the growth of the next-fastest Michigan city, Grand Rapids, which added 1,847 residents.

Mayor Duggan credited years of coordinated efforts across neighborhoods, renovations of thousands of vacant homes, new housing construction, reliable city services, major job-center developments, significant crime reductions, and Detroit’s world-class sports and entertainment districts for the surge.
